CHAPTER 12

Ben was out of bed early the next morning. He dressed and headed downstairs to find his mom and Alina already up.

“Hey,” said his mom. “Did you sleep well?”

He couldn’t keep a smile from spreading across his face.

“Well enough,” he said.

Alina had her script out in front of her at the kitchen table. Ben sat down next to her and shot her a glance.

“Which scene are you reading through?”

“The one where Juliette meets up with Romeo in the…” She trailed off, frowning slightly. “In the brothel.”

“Oh,” said Ben. He wasn’t sure what else to say. Even mentioning that he wasn’t sure if she’d end up getting the part of Juliette seemed like it might come across the wrong way.

Ben ate breakfast, hash browns and sausage, and then he and Alina headed off to rehearsal. They walked side by side, and their familiarity with each other made the long stretches of silence comfortable, rather than awkward.

“Luciana is probably going to want your opinion on who ends up acting across from you,” said Alina.

“Yeah…” said Ben. “She’s told me as much already.”

They walked a bit further before he looked over at her, trying to read her expression.

“Do you want the part?” he asked. “To be Juliette?”

He’d expected her to laugh, and immediately bring up how ridiculous it would be, for her to be Juliette, while her little brother was Romeo. At the very least, he expected her to mention the weirdness of the situation, and how close they’d be stepping toward a line that shouldn’t typically be crossed. Instead, she just shrugged.

“It’s one of the lead roles,” said Alina. “And lately, I’ve been starting to enjoy acting a lot more, even more than I when I was in the theater company, in high school.”

Ben nodded slowly, feeling his stomach twist slightly, and an odd sensation spread across his loins. There were so many scenes that would end up putting them into compromising positions in the play. It felt strange to think about Alina and him making an attempt at some of them.

They slowed as the theater came into view in the distance. It was a misty morning, with a thin layer of fog coating the street and surrounding area. As such, neither of them noticed Jessie until they were almost at the bottom of the steps.

“I need to talk to you for a minute,” said Jessie. “Privately!”

Ben glanced over at his sister. Alina smiled at him and gave his shoulder a quick squeeze before disappearing up the steps and into the theater.

“Jessie, look,” said Ben. “I still haven’t decided who-“

“You will decide!” she snapped. “Right now!”

Ben sighed and looked around. He’d been late to almost every rehearsal, and judging by the lack of cast members outside, he was probably already late again.

“I can’t pick you over the rest of them if it turns out that you’re not the best fit, Jessie,” said Ben. “And obviously, Luciana gets the final say.”
